It was a great pleasure to have Consul General Westphalen from the Consulate General of Finland in LA visit us. We met with the UAA staff in several meetings during her visit, and discussed the possibilities Alaska and Finland could develop on the university, education and state levels. University of Oulu has already agreed to start cooperation with the UAA College of Education, and we will be sharing more information on that soon.
Consul General Westphalen had the honor to decorate the Emeritus Honorary Consul Wayne Stolt with a Commander of the Order of the Lion of Finland on Sunday 9/9/12 at the Finnish Club. Mr. Stolt was recognized for his 28 years of service to Finland, and the decoration was granted by the President of Finland.
The next Suomi Club meeting will be on May 6th at 5PM at the Finlandia Hall. The theme is Vappu, and Hanna and Malla will be preparing makaroonilaatikko. There will be some news about the Suomikoulu in Alaska, amongst other things.

The Finnish award-winning movie Le Havre by Aki Kaurismaki will be shown at the Beartooth movietheatre on Monday 13th of February at 7.45 PM.
“In this wry and warmhearted portrait of the French harbor city that gives the film its name, legendary Finnish filmmaker Aki Kaurismäki (The Man Without A Past , The Match Factory Girl, Leningrad Cowboys Go America ) pays tribute to the Gallic cinema he loves with a film unlike anything else in the Kaurismäki canon, yet which still feels like it couldn’t have been made by anyone else. Fate throws young African refugee Idrissa (Blondin Miguel) into the path of Marcel Marx (André Wilms), a well-read bohemian who works as a shoe-shiner. With innate optimism and the unwavering support of his community, Marcel stands up to officials doggedly pursuing the boy for deportation. A political fairy tale that exists somewhere between the reality of contemporary France and the classic cinema of Jean-Pierre Melville and Marcel Carné, Le Havre is a charming, deadpan delight.”
